The Robin

The Robin

The look:
On the upside the Robin is olive-brown. The front, the gorge and the breast are lightly coloured orange-red. The stomach is white and the eyes are black. The sexes have the same look. The young animals are brown speckled on the upside. The face, the breast and flanks are dark brown. They already aren’t red coloured. They get till 14 cm long and their weight is between 10 and 21, 5 g.

Diffusion and living space:
The Robin usually lives in the temperate Zone (for example: in Europe and the Mediterranean- islands). In the middle of Europe the Robins often stay there for the whole Year. But some fly in the winter toward the south, but only short routes. They are partial migrants. The Robin isn’t very shy. It lives in parks, gardens, woods and hedges till to the upper boundary of a forest.

The brood:
They get their sexual maturity in the first year of their life.
They build their nests near to the ground and very covert (for example: between tree- roots). The underground of the nest consists of dry sheets. For the real nest they use parts of plants, moss and fine roots. Then they pad it out with the hair of animals and plumes.
Usually the brood surges in the beginning of March. But in the middle of Europe they surges in April. They can get between 2 and 3 broods in one Year. So the incubation goes till August. One clutch consists of 3 to9 eggs. The females breed about 12 to 15 days. Two weeks later they fledge. For the second brood the never use the same nest from the first time.
